Tile over crawlspace and slab?

Our kitchen and hearth room area is half crawlspace and half concrete slab. I'm trying to decide on flooring, and I'm unsure if tiling over the entire area is a good idea. We live in earthquake country, and I'm concerned the crawlspace area will shift/settle and the slab area won't, and it might crack the grout or tile.

They are the same height now, and of course hardibacker would be installed over the whole area.

My other option is marmoleum click.

The hardi board would help span the seam as long as you made sure a hardi seam didn't land on the floor seam. A latex grout would also allow some give.

Don- thank you for your reply. Do you think the hardi is sufficient, or should I spring or the ditra?

Ditra is a fine product and may work fine. It's just my opinion having worked on situations just like yours that the firmness or rigidness of the hardi spans the seem better. I've done several framed to slab applications over the years and they have held up fine. Just never in an earthquake zone. Although we have had a 3 point something shake here in the mountains of NC a few times. Good luck
