Best hardwood for high traffic/abuse

Does anyone have a hardwood species or brand that they would recommend for a high traffic / abuse area? I'm thinking something that wouldn't show (as in obvious) the nicks and scratches it's going to get, but would still look good. Am I looking for the impossible?

I noticed you replied to my previous post. I have seen the Appalachian Time Worn Maple Hand Scrapped locally. It is made where it looks distressed so dents and scratches are not as noticeable. At least not on the Autumn Maple sample that I saw. I am looking online to buy at Floor Mall but I am concerned about issues that might arise. I might pay a little more and buy locally.

Check out a sample in your area. I was not going to consider hardwood until I saw this brand. It really looks great.

cricket - thanks for responding. I checked the Appalachian Time Worn and see that it is engineered. I think I want solid hardwood instead.

The time honored Red oak would be my suggestion. We have three Golden Retrievers and they knock the heck out of it and it still looks good. Apart from species is the finish. A satin factory finish will not show dents and scratches like glossy will.

Hartco acrylic impregnated wood is 2 1/2 times harder than any species. Its whats used in many commercial stores.
