Yes they're native to the U.S. and are so beautiful. They are a unique species and the only member of the family still in existence. I would love to travel out west someday and see them in the wild.

Bonnie, I just cut the grass, sprayed weed killer and Deer Fence repellent was dragged across the yard by Shasta going after a rabbit and standing for 10 minutes alongside my shed because she wouldn't leave where the rabbit hid and now I am going out to trim the grass.....so, it looks nice but right now I'm not in love. BUT, thank you, I appreciate it.

Celeste , excellent question. I do hybridize but I have learned many lessons since I first started . Many of these shown are fairly mature plants now . When I started hybridizing I made little tags that hung off the scapes to record the cross when harvesting the seeds . that part was fine . However at that time I could not find any info on how others kept track of their seedlings planted out . To this day I see plants that look like they could not possibly have the parentage that some people say they have . So all of my plants above have to be recorded as seedling x seedling because I can't be 100 % sure of parentage When I went to plant the seedlings out I used white vinyl blind pieces with the name of the cross inserting these tags in back of each plant as well as writing the crosses in a book . Mother Nature thought better and had her way with me , first blowing many of those tags away thru the winter/early spring with frost heave and later wiping clean the remaining names written on those tags in permanent marker . Seems not all permanent markers are made equal . As well some of the seedlings just don't make it so between all those issues I couldn't even rely on the written record . It was no longer accurate. At least I couldn't be sure it was . Not sure how everyone else plants their seedlings and are 100 percent sure that the plant they are looking at in the spring is the same plant recorded in the fall. I now make those same tags but they get planted underneath the seedling and are written in pencil on the tag. No more being heaved out of the ground and no more fading . HB pencil written tags remain legible even after many seasons Live and learn they say .
