 o
Gun as a Present???

I figure this is as good of a place as any to ask my very ignorant question. I thought my DH would like a gun for Christmas - something for target practice; a rifle. Is it even possible to buy a gun as a gift? I'm thinking background checks and lots of paperwork is involved, but I'm not sure.

Thanks!

Yes, it is legal to "gift" a firearm as long as the person that is receiving it is legally allowed to own a firearm
in accordance with State/Federal laws.

Simply put, if they are capable of walking in a buying the firearm their self, then it is legal to "gift" that person a firearm.

If the person you are gifting the firearm to is not allowed by law to own a firearm, then it would be called a "straw purchase" and would be ILLEGAL.

Correct. Straw purchases can net 10 years in prison.

If he is legally allowed to own a gun then it would be best to let him choose the one he wants, let him fill out all the paperwork and go through the background check and when he is approved you can pay for it.
