Heat n Glow Slimline Gas Fireplace questions

Hi, our Slimline 2000 (Heat n Glow) is about 18-20 years old. It's been such a wonderful smaller unit. We have a 1929 year old home with the "fake" fireplace and mantle. We were able to install a smaller gas unit just making the area a few inchers wider and deeper. Most of the years we would have an occasional thermopile go. Other than that, in 2002 we replaced the "guts" of the unit which included the pilot assembly & valve. This past February we had a repair person come out because our fireplace would all the sudden shut down. The fan would keep running, pilot light remain on, but the flames would just shut down. This would happen any time between 15 minutes to 4 hours after running it. The guy found a broken wire, fixed but tested with the meter on the pilot assembly & valve. Valve tested okay. Pilot assembly tested low. Now within the last few days, it shut down within 45 minutes, then restarted all on its own, then shut down after about 10 minutes. The repair guy is saying a new pilot assembly should fix it. What I don't understand is why the pilot assembly if we have no problem with the pilot light going out, just the flames shutting down after a certain amount of time. Also, we were told not to clean the glass since the glass is so very old that cleaning it will end up taking the finish off, and it will look worse, and a new glass will end up costing quite a bit.. Our glass is not very dirty, but there is a spot. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
