Can someone tell me what this is in my fireplace?

The fireplace was original to the house built in 1978 and was converted to a gas log fireplace since then. I've removed the logs to clean it because when it was converted the previous owner failed to do so!! Anyways, the only thing i could possibly come up with is that its a 'fireback'...but why did it have about 50 screws (literally).
