Worth replacing vent-free log set?

I have had American Hearth vent-free log set for close to 10 years now. I can't stand the smell, everyone else in the house can't smell a thing and loves the heat.

I have received a couple of quotes on the installation of a Regency direct vent fireplace, and am waiting for one more from an installer that has a good reputation. Gas type is propane.

I have had the thermocouple replaced twice now, most recently a couple of months ago, and the guy suggested I clean the logs to help with the smell. I have cleaned them annually, but no difference to me.

Before I spend $5,000+ for a new fireplace, is there any merit in replacing the vent-free log set with a newer set? I am wondering if the newer logs have improved over the years?
