Could we add fireplace onto existing chimney?

We have a sturdy looking brick chimney that runs from the basement through our two-story 1941 home. It was apparently used for a coal-burning furnace. It goes right behind a bare wall in our living room, which would be ideal for a fireplace. Could it be done without costing a fortune and/or many headaches? Who should I contact?

For a fireplace you need the chimney to be directly above the firebox. But I would look into a woodstove. They are MUCH more efficient and you can use the existing chimney with a liner to go from 8" to the 6" opening for the stove.
