Fireback heat shield

I purchased an iron fireback heat shield to protect the back wall of my manufactured fireplace that has experienced some heat damage. My only installation option is to lean the heat shield against that back wall. Will the heat shield heat up and damage the wall in the area that it makes contact with the back wall? Do I need to figure a way to install the heat shield in a free standing manner that doesn't touch the back wall?

Thanks.
