is top vent only for chimney use? help!

I am looking to buy a direct vent zero clearance natural gas fireplace a Lennox Superior brand.

This would be used in a new build but I have noticed that the unit is a top vent. I thought I would need a rear vent.

Can a top vent be used safely NOT in a chimney?
