no gas coming through

completely new to fireplaces

moved in to a new place, the gas man connected up the gas and lit the fireplace...

i didn't want it on so i flicked a switch on the wall, it turns off but not completely, faint blue flame

so i turned off the gas supply in the bottom panel (far left red knob). that did it

a week or so later, i want to turn it back on as it's getting cold. when i turn the red knob, it doesn't sound like any gas is coming through, so when i try the spark ignitor, it sparks, but there is no gas to light

That was the pilot light, it is supposed to stay on. You should not turn the gas off unless there is an issue or it is summer and you don't need/want the heat. Though insects could be an issue if they decide to get in the vent.

Your black dial has three modes, off, pilot and on. There is a safety function in the fireplace which stops the flow of gas if the pilot light goes out. So to light the pilot light requires you to turn the back knob to pilot,, and probably press he knob in (but maybe not, don't know) then press the red button to spark. You may need to hold the knob in for about 20-30 seconds until the system registers the heat from the flame.

Once done, turn the black knob more to get it to go on.
