After doing a lot of lurking and reading lots of posts about fireplaces, I finally got the nerve to refinished ours.

What an improvement, great job!

WOW!What a transformation. Wish I had the funds to do that or the talent to do it myself but I don't. Great job you should be proud of yorself.

bluekitchen, I am considering doing the same thing as you. My concern is what is behind the brick when you removed it. I have a larger wall with all brick and an insert in the firebox. Was there sheathing and studs behind brick or just lathe

Very nice - I'm jealous!!! I've been wanting to do something similar (except lighten that area) and just haven't gotten the nerve up. Yet that is! Looks great.

Thanks all. I did the sheetrock above the fireplace when we first moved in 3 years ago. It took me forever to decide what I wanted around the opening and on the hearth. I love it and am REALLY glad it's done. Amy, I did not remove the brick. Both the sheetrock and the granite went right over the brick.
