Looking for an electric fireplace to use as a spot heater

I want a good looking fireplace that will put out enough heat to supplement our bathroom on the fringe days before we turn on the furnace. The ambience will be a plus in addition to the fact that I need a "piece of furniture" or cabinetry to go along a blank wall in the large (18 x 12) bathroom. It will only be run occasionally, but when it does I want it to feel warm and look nice. Can those free-standing fireplaces be built to look built-in or do they have to sit up against the baseboard and stick out from the wall? I would like to find something under $1000 and would prefer something even cheaper, like maybe $400. Any brands or specific types of fireplaces recommended or that we should avoid? Thanks.
