Mantel Depth - need opinions

We are replacing our current fireplace mantel and need your opinions on depth. It is just a shelf (no side pieces) mounted to the wall. The current mantel is 9" deep but recesses in with several different moldings. Our new mantel will be a contemporary box style, but I'm thinking 9" deep might make it look like it juts out too much. The width is 64-1/4" and the height is 6". I'm figuring the depth should be somewhere between 6" to 8". What do you think?

RE: Mantel Depth - need opinions

Since heat rises, the location and size of the mantel shelf is critical. I would not install a new shelf that is deeper than the one you are replacing. Nor would I install it closer to the firebox than the one you are replacing. Aside from these considerations, what you do is a matter of your personal taste.
