I'm looking to revamp our existing wood burning fireplace, and want to upgrade it to a more modern look/feel. It's currently vented, but I'm not sure about the overall condition of the flue/chimney. Likely it would need significant attention.

I was considering a gas fireplace, for the simplicity and convenience. Then I came across some "ethanol" or ventless options as well. Has anyone used one of these, and if so, what has your experience been?

This will be for a rather small vacation home, so full-time heating is not a concern. We also have floorboard heat installed, so it's more for ambiance/effect.
