"Fire Balls" for gas fireplace

For the past few years I've had a gas fireplace (vented) with removable logs. They get a lot of soot on them and are a little stained. I'm wondering if anyone has replaced their logs with the more modern looking "fire balls"? I hadn't thought about it until I removed the logs to light the pilot light and saw how pretty the fire was without the logs. It would be nice to know any unforeseen problems in advance.
