Hi,

I have a fireplace on my first floor with a door in the floor for ashes that leads to the basement/ash pit. The first year we had the house we had no problem. We replaced the gas furnace with a high efficient system. When we use the fire place we now get smoke, or a smokey smell in the basement. We also had a chimney cap placed installed to keep out animals.

Any ideas? One chimney sweep mentioned it may be due to a lack of air in the basement.
