Unable to shutoff Mendota DXV 45

Our LP fireplace is three years old (third winter now). Last year we had the thermostat replaced and it ran great all winter. I just started it for the first time today and it started fine. But I can not shut it off. It has a remote so I turned it to 60 degrees and the room temp was 78 but it would not shut down. I turned the hard wired switch from the Remote position to the Off position and it would not shut down. I had to turn the flame switch off and the pilotlight off and the fan shut down in about 30 minutes.
What can be the problem? Just to get the tech out here is about $200.
