Do they have something like Dekko stone in your area? It's sort of like a stucco. I am not sure if Dekko is just a trade name for something in my area and whether or not they have such a thing other places.

No pictures, but if you're interested in real stone, I'd consider soapstone, bluestone, granite, quartzite. With the possible exception of the bluestone, you'll find a tremendous variety of colors, patterns and finishes available. Travertine is a very soft stone so removing stains (which it will inevitably get from smoke and soot)will be more difficult than with a harder stone.

Marble and Granite are the right choice of natural stones to be used for a fireplace surround. Moreover these can be cleaned easily with mild detergent water.
