Valor Horizon programming

I just got my fireplace installed, I lit the pilot manually then moved the man/on control to on. My remote wont control it. Battery is good in remote. I want to be able to turn it on or off anytime I want. I programmed the remote as per instruction, still no luck. What do I have to do to have the control I want?
