| We just started our search for a good wood burning insert, but haven't found a definitive rating source that ranks the many brands and models. Everyone says they are the best, and there are dozens to pick from. This week we priced a Regency "Hearth Heater," Model H2100, here in Albuquerque. ( We chose this for the cooking surface, which would be helpful in an emergency.) With faceplate and 2-speed blower, it was $2207, with a "limited lifetime warranty." The stainless steel vent kit adds another $300, and the contractor the store uses for installation, quoted us $685 to deliver it and put it in. So far, that's $3192, plus tax, for a total of $3415.44! The unit seemed well-made, and had the highest efficiency of any model we have seen, but this still seems pretty pricey for what you get. The installer's business card doesn't say if he is "FTI" certified. Is that a big deal? Any comments from people who have bought from Regency? THX |

| You might want to post your questions at hearth.com, which has a very active forum discussing just these types of issues. For the record, we just put in an insert and paid $150 for delivery to our door, and another $1000 for installation. The installation price seemed steep but it actually took them nearly three full days (mostly due to mistakes they made and not having the right parts on hand). One thing to make sure of: you want to have a full stainless steel vent that runs from the insert all the way to the top of your chimney. Some installers try to do this on the cheap by just running the vent part way up the chimney and letting the smoke vent out in the middle of the chimney. |
