Resurfacing ugly eyesore of a dated red-brown fireplace.

I just recently bought a home with a very dated 1980's fireplace. It looks like what most people would picture, an eyesore. We don't like the traditional brick color and want to find a way to create a new look without renovation or covering up the existing brick for now. (We are considering an eventual overhaul in the years to come). For now we just want to resurface the brick. I am considering staining or painting and am hoping to get a natural look. The house contains mostly sage green accents, tans, and browns and I'd really like to resurface the fireplace to coordinate with those colors. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!

Thank you sincerely!
