Pellet stove Help! Something isnt right

Posted by missmudd (My Page) on

I bought a used witfield pellet stove and I have a problem. Of course I dont have the manual and I dont know what to do. It heats and feeds just fine but when the pellets come down the shute and hits the coals in the box the coals in the box fly up and out of the box leaving a bunch of uncombusted little bits of pellets on the floor of the pellet stove. I figure it has something to do with air flow but I am afraid to do anything and mess everything up royaly. I have a place I can adjust combustion air, pellet feed rate and the damper can be adjusted. What do you all think? TIA

I know with Harman stoves you can go to their website and download the user manuals. Try that at Witfield?

Maybe call the company directly.

Contact a dealer in your town. You probably need a service call too.

The Whitfield stove installation & operation manuals are available for download. They are in pdf format. Here's the link, then click on your stove model, then look under downloads. Right click and save target if using IE, or save link if using FireFox. Click on optional link url I provided.

Here is a link that might be useful: whitfield stoves

Start with the combustion air damper. Move it to a more closed position. You'll know it's closing when the fire becomes lazier and more orange than yellow. BUT, you don't want it too Orange or it will begin to soot. Typically, pulling the lever away from the stove will open it, pushing in toward the stove will close the damper. Find the middle ground. The lennoxwebsite has the owners manual for Whitfield in a PDF format. www.lennoxhearthproducts.com. At the end of the day it may require a service call. Best if you can solve it yourself, the dealers are very busy this time of year with new installations. Depending on the model, there may be a combustion blower trim adjustment you can make on the control board. What model is it?

It sounds like your stove is operating just fine. It's perfectly normal for the pellets to drop down the "chute", and then see little "sparks" or "coals" as the new pellets drop into the burnpot. If you've never seen a pellet stove burn before, it might look strange to see the little "coals" flying up out of the burn pot - but it's normal.

Do you have a pellet stove dealer nearby (doesn't have to be a Whitfield dealer) that has a display of pellet stoves burning? If so, you can just stop by and observe one of their stoves, and you can see for yourself if your stove is operating normally compared to another stove at the dealer's place.

Advice...continued

Oh...forgot to mention. The "uncombusted little pellet pieces on the floor of the pellet stove"...that's normal too! You have to clean out the pellet stove daily (or at least every other day).

I've owned a Quadrafire pellet stove for 2 years, and trust me...I clean mine every day. It works flawlessly, but it does require a few minutes of cleaning every day.

For me...I wait for the stove to cool down (very important), then I use my vacuum cleaner to vacuum out the ashes out of the stove, and I clean the glass. Takes me less than 5 minutes, and that includes adding new pellets to the hopper. With the amount of money that I save versus using my heat pumps - it's well worth the couple minutes of daily cleaning and maintenance!

Note regarding vacuuming the ashes - Make sure the stove is cool, and the ashes are no longer hot! If you vacuum up the clinkers in the burnpot while they're hot, it will burn a hole right through your vacuum cleaner bag (I learned that lesson from experience). You can buy a specially made ash vacuum, but they cost about $200.

I own a Whitfield as well and have questioned the same situation. I was told by a tech. that it's completely normal to have pellets pop out of the burn box and fall to the bottom.

Just a long overdue update. Figured out it was bad pellets. I changed to Golden Fire and they work great, Premium Blazer pellets are almost as good.

RE: Pellet stove Help! Something isnt right

My whitefield produces ample heat and MORE than ample fly ash. The nasty stuff may be invisible while moving across a room but when it lands on horizontal surfaces, it is impossible not to notice. It is everywhere including my wife's quilts some thirty feet away! I have searched unsuccessfully for leaks. The dealer informed me that a "little soot is nomral." Right. Can anyone help me.
The stove is 3 years old and I am unwilling to use it anymore unless I can eliminate the problem.
