 o
Old Gas Fireplace

We recently bought an older home and discovered the wood fireplace had been converted to gas. I'm about to arrange to have the fireplace serviced and chimney cleaned to ensure everything functions well.

I've never seen anything like this one before and presume it's a rather old system. Oddly, the only location I can find to turn on the gas is the little valve at the elbow which joins the fire unit (pardon my layman's terminology) which seems dangerously close to the flames. I suspect the service technician will recommend upgrading to a newer gas system, but I hate having that kind of conversation when I'm uninformed. I can't find a brand name or marking anywhere on it to research it online.

Can anyone tell me about what is in there now? I've posted a photo.

Thank you!
