Newbie Question: Replacing Fireplace with Wood Stove

Newbie Question:

We just bought a house that currently has a fireplace, which we don't want. So we purchased a Jotul F3 CB wood burning stove which we are going to have a professional install in front of the fireplace, on the hearth.

The woodstove has a 6" stove pipe opening.

Just so I don't get talked into some useless expensive configuration: what can I expect my chimney guy to do?

During our home inspection, we were told that our chimney liner (clay) is in great condition. We will absolutely need to have a new liner put in for this wood stove?

You will probably experience a better draft, easier fire starting, etc. with a a six inch liner all the way to the top of the chimney. Is it absolutely necessary? That depends on a number of factors. These would include the size of the existing flue, whether the chimney is completely within the house or external, your use of the stove, the strength of the existing draft, etc., etc.

An insulated 6" liner would not be a "useless expensive configuration." It would be the safest and most efficient approach. That's not the same thing as absolutely necessary, but rather the ideal.
