Damper removal

I am going to install a wood burning fireplace insert to my current fireplace. Fireplace/house built in 1978. How do I remove the fireplace damper to have clearance for a 6" chimney liner that I need to install along with my insert?

RE: Damper removal

You probably don't want to remove the entire damper, but only release the damper "door" and let it fall back. At that point, you'll probably have to "squish" the pipe into an oval to go through the damper opening.
