Is this limestone? And suggestions for painting?

I just closed on my house on Friday.
The living room has multiple challenges and the fireplace is the biggest one. I have no idea what to do for wall colors between the fireplace and carpet.
The carpet is staying and in my humble opinion, it makes the brick looks a sickly yellowish with the color. Not to mention that it seems uncomfortably squat and wide in the long living room.While I normally oppose of painting masonry, I think it will be a must for this fireplace.
Any suggestion on how to make it look better? Would you paint this type of stone?
