fireplace heatsaver

Hello,
I want to prevent the room heat from escaping into the fireplace during winter. I have, thus, been thinking of making a panel out of plywood just a little bigger than the fireplace opening and gluing some foam insulation to the back of it, making a tight fit on the fireplace opening. Anybody had any experience with such things? Do you think this will work reasonably well? Any downsides?

RE: fireplace heatsaver

That sounds like a good idea, to me. Maybe use some old carpet on the back of the wood to help keep in the most heat as possible.
