Ugly fireplace, can I take off the bricks?

Hi, I have an ugly fireplace in my 1950's ranch. It sticks out from the wall: 5 inches above the mantle, 9 inches below the mantle, and the hearth is about 20 inches. Can I take off the brick so my fireplace will be flush with the wall? What does that entail? Please share any pictures if you have done the same. I've put the photo in a link, can't figure out how to get it in this message.
Thanks!
