painting 'brick' in gas fireplace?

We just moved into a house with a Lennox gas fireplace in the great room. The back and sides are patterned to look like firebrick, but they're a very pale tan color that practically 'yells' FAKE! Would it do any harm to spray a 'dusting' of flat black engine/barbecue grill paint on the backing to simulate smoke from prior woodburning?
