Cleaning an old brick fireplace

We have a red brick fireplace that has 40plus years of soot and dirt accumulation on it and I'm unsure of the easiest, most effective way to get it off. We're in the process of remodeling the FR it's in, so this is a good time to do any messy processes that need to be done. We want the fireplace to look as good as the rest of the room!
