Opinions sought re: 'jazzing up my fireplace'

My fireplace currently has a non descript black slate surround and hearth.

I would like to "jazz" it up a bit by refacing it with granite (a color w/ black in it like verde or uba tuba) but I was planning to leave the black slate hearth as is.

So my question is: is it ok to have a surround that matches or compliments the hearth but is not exactly the same material? Looking forward to your response. Design suggestions welcome......
Laurie
PS I'm attempting to do this myself, thinking it's fairly straightforward, use thinset to fasten the "legs" and then the top piece, am I correct? Thanks
