Help with gas logs

Posted by mskaty (My Page) on

We are wanting to replace our vent free gas logs but don't know where to begin to find the best kind that won't cost a small fortune. Our house is only about 1700 sq. ft.
Does anyone know of any alternatives to gas logs in a "box" versus a chimney? Would like to get away from the use of propane, if at all possible.
Thanks much

RE: Help with gas logs

Vent free is not a good idea because of its adverse effect on indoor air quality. Check with your local town codes. They probably say it's a violation to put vent free in a sleeping room because of the safety hazard. Read Consumer Reports article on this issue. I think it's available on their website without a fee. If what you have now is without a chimney, forget about it, unless you want to go with electric. But that's not likely to give you much heat, just atmosphere.

The optimal serious heat generator in gas logs is direct vent, but they cost a few thousand $.
