Fireplace: As is or change it?

This is a focal point in our family room and I want it to be breathtakingly beautiful. I am REALLY nervous to paint the brink, it seems so permanent to me. So, I only painted the mantle black and took off the 1970's brass front and put up a black screen for now.

I am just looking for suggestions/ideas to help this look like the beautiful focal point it should be :)

That's not a bad brick. I'd hate to paint it too. It's so very permanent! You should take this question to the home decorating forum if you haven't yet. There's gotta be an answer there!
