cast iron fireplace- can anyone help?

Hi,
I've recently bought a cast iron fireplace and was hoping to use it as an open fire. I bought it off ebay so didn't realise until I picked it up that it looks as though it used to have a back boiler on it.

The thing that I'm a bit confused about is that it doesn't have a vent thing (I don't know what they're called!) to control the air flow, and doesn't appear to ever have had one as there's nothing to attach one to.

I've been told that without one of these, the fire will just roar up the chimney. Does anyone know if that is the case with this type of fire and if so is there anywhere that fits them? Thanks, H
