Heat shield for fireplace

I'm planning to have some work done on my fireplace.

The fire box in the back is cracked and needs to be repaired. The contractor is recommending a heat shield for $225.

Is a heat shield necessary after the repair and does the price seem right? I've seen stainless heat shields on the web for ~$150.

I would do your research. When I replaced my chimney liner I found the people over at Chimney Liner Depot were very help on all fireplace/ chimney subjects. I would give them a call and see if they can help.
