Fireplace repair - is remortaring neccessary?

Posted by phish (My Page) on

Our chimney sweep came last week and said there were small cracks in the mortar in the back of the chimney. He recommended we have him remortar it because if not, we could have a chimney fire, and that over long time, the bricks will collapse. Does anyone know if this type of repair is neccessary?
