Gas fireplace in old house

My home is about 105 yrs old. I have what looks to be an old gas fire place but was probably just a gas heater of some sort because we found some cast iron covers in the basement. There is a gas line coming up from the basement through the floor of the firebox. There is a rectangular hole leading into the chimney currently stuffed with insulation. There is no obvious damper. The opening of the f/p is about 30"hx24"w12"d or so. The inside walls look like they were just smeared with plaster, nothing pretty. Is it possible to install a gas f/p using the existing firebox and chimney?
