Need help with fireplace surround options...

I am in the process of having our trim guys make our wood fireplace mantels, which will be painted white. I need some major help finding ideas on how to tile the surround, though. I have spent HOURS googling ideas and haven't been able to find anything that I love. Does anyone have any places/pics to share? My renovated house will be kind of "transitional", so nothing too intricate or too traditional. Any thoughts??

I think black slate, satin finish, is sufficiently neutral that it will blend well with any decor, whether traditional or modern or in between.

I just responded to your later post, but if you are still deciding on materials, you should see the site below. Gorgeous fireplaces, almost all with black slate. You could use slate tiles for the same effect. See the Soane collection under "Products"

If you want a lighter color, travertine or granite tiles or custom cut slabs work well.
