Completely take out fireplace and wall?

I wanted a fireplace in my home, but this one is just too big. Is it possible to get rid of the fireplace completely? And I just noticed that it's not built INTO the separator wall, so could that back wall still remain and just tear down the fireplace and wall space above it? Or would we have to tear down the entire wall and have the living room and kitchen one big open space? I'm fine either way, but I just want to know if it's possible!
The home is all one-story.
How much do you think it would cost to do this? Thank you for your input!!
