well ijust bought a house, and it has a wood fireplace in the living room and a gas fireplace in the basement. We plan on using both of them, i think?!?! and we dont know much about them. I think we should have the chimmney swept above the wood fireplace, is this true and how much should i expect to pay? is there certain woods that are best to burn and is there any maintenance that i should be doing to eith or of the fireplaces????

Hopefully the pros will chime in.

I'd guess the gas fp would be safe to operate. I never had issues with either of mine, just light the pilot and you're good to go.
Not sure about the wood burner?
Anyway, I've always enjoyed burning the hardwoods better.

You should get an inspection for sure. Mine ran about $75 to inspect. I think it was $130 if they cleaned it.
