Photos of fireplace tiles needed

I am ordering fireplace tiles to place around my fireplace surround. I am thinking of doing 4x4's for the surround, but not sure if I should use 12x12's or 16x16's on the ground. Does anyone have pics of either to share or advice to give?? Thanks!!

RE: Photos of fireplace tiles needed

We are doing the same thing right now. We used three 18 x 18 inch tiles for the main area of the hearth, with a 2 inch border of little mosaic tiles around the whole thing. This was just to make the size right, not to be decorative, although it looked nice too.
The problem was that the large tiles were 1/2 inch thick and the mosaics were less. We should have put some kind of backer under the mosaics instead of trying to use more thinset to level them. They looked sort of wobbly. Being a perfectionist, my husband just chiseled out all of those little tiles to try it again. Not fun!
No pictures yet, sorry!
