damper in fireplace

I am about to install a Nat. gas fireplace insert with 4" aluminum duct work to the top of the chimney.

The damper will be in the way and will have to be dealt with.

1-do I need the damper at all or can I just leave it open?

2 or should I cut a hole into the damper to allow the duct work through and then attach to the stove or

3 can I remove the damper and handle altogether as the unit will have glass doors etc?

thanks
