Woodstove surround

We use a freestanding woodstove, located in the living room, for heating our home. Last year we had a new, much more efficient, stove installed. Now I would like to update the hearth and surround. We currently have basalt rock and mortar, 28 years old, and are looking for something more interesting. Does anyone know of sites to look for ideas. It would be nice to look at both design and materials.

Ceramic or porcelain tile would be a good choice. In passive solar homes, the floors that get maximum sun during the day typically are either tile or brick because they absorb the sun's heat, retain it, and continue to radiate it after the sun sets, therefore prolonging the heating effect. You can do the same with your surround.
