can I use an old wood stove chimney for my pellet stove?

Well, not technically the chimney, but the spot where the chimney was...

Previous owners of our home had a wood stove, but took it with them when they moved. The wood stove installation apparently had a stove pipe that came vertically out of the stove, then did a 90 degree turn and went through the external wall of the house.

There is nothing remaining of the stovepipe or chimney, except for the hole in the external wall where the stove pipe went through (about 6 feet from the floor).

Can we use this same hole for venting the pellet stove? Most of the illustrations I've seen show the vent coming horizontally from the stove and straight through the external wall, but I'd obviously prefer to use the hole that is already there instead of ripping up the brick hearth!
