| We are replacing a fireplace with a Regency Horizon fireplace. It will be installed about 8-10 inches above the floor. We want to replace the brick hearth with the wood floor that is in the rest of the room. The stone mason and fireplace installer says we can do that but I am wondering is that safe?

| Whether or not you need a hearth and, if you need one, what size should it be, are questions for the manufacturer of the gas fireplace installation you are planning. But heat rises. That means another important specification you need to be concerned about is the distance between the top of the firebox and any combustible material, such as a wood mantle or mantle shelf. Any reputable manufacturer of gas fireplace inserts should be able to provide the specifications that you need. If the manufacturer cannot answer the question, consider going to another one who can. |

| All of that information is in the installation instructions available in PDF format at the link you provided. A hearth is not normally required for a permanently enclosed glass-front gas fireplace. |

| We have a "floating" front fireplace opening as we removed our raised hearth years ago when we remodelled our home. It was pretty high but when we changed the room we decided to have marble framing installed into the floor and around the fireplace opening instead. Last year we decided to get a gas fireplace insert installed and went with an Avalon. It looks great and sits fairly flush to the wall. It doesn't look out of place at all. And we really enjoyed being able to turn on the fire instantly with our new remote control. Made last year's winter easier to bear. No mess with logs or ashes any longer either! |
