Is a Tile/Brick Hearth Needed for Gas Fireplaces?

We are replacing a fireplace with a Regency Horizon fireplace. It will be installed about 8-10 inches above the floor. We want to replace the brick hearth with the wood floor that is in the rest of the room. The stone mason and fireplace installer says we can do that but I am wondering is that safe?

Here's the link to the fireplace:

We also have another fireplace with gas logs and would like to replace the brick hearth with the hardwood floor that is in the rest of the room. Again, the same stone mason and the fireplace installer says we can do that. Is that safe also?

Thanks!
