closing up free-standing fireplace chimney opening

We have removed an old free-standing fireplace from our basement. It had a very ugly galvanized tube chimney that we have removed, too. We think our local heating/cooling store can tell us how to cover the hole in the basement where the chimney was attached. But...we now have a box-shaped recess in which the chimney was. It is a concrete surrounded area that is approx a 2 ft cube. We want to close that area up as it is a funnel for rain to flow into the basement. Can we just fill it with concrete? Do we need another moisture barrier? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
