Fireplace Renovation

We want to refurbish our outdated brick wood burning fireplace. The bricks are held on by a Black mortar type material and almost impossible to remove. Can we just put the new mortar over top of this material? We are replacing the brick with a rock material. What is your advice?

you can probably but it is going to make it very thick and heavy,basically what you are doing is cladding your own fireplace in stone. there's a website where you can find some tips that can help you decide if you want to do it yourself, might be helpful to have a look
