Covering Up an old fireplace

amyf_2009

This may sound strange...but I want to cover up an old fireplace. When I bought the house, they told me the flu had been sealed and the fireplace was unusable. The wood mantel was absolutely hideous, so I took it off the wall. Now I have brick and wood paneling on the wall and the empty brick hole for the fireplace. Is there anything special I need to do to cover it up? Or can I just drywall over the entire thing and be done with it? Needless to say, my front bedroom is a disaster!
